Chocolate Cake with Fudge Frosting

We recently celebrated Tyler’s (my husband) birthday and of course we made him my families famous Sinfully Rich Chocolate Cake with Fudge Frosting. We don’t call it sinful for no reason… the fudge frosting is EVERYTHING!

We started dating right before his birthday several years ago and my mom of course had to make him the Sinfully Rich Chocolate Cake with Fudge Frosting. That may be one of the reasons we’re still together. He has quite the addiction to this Sinfully Rich Chocolate Cake.

He honestly says “this is the best chocolate dessert he has every had in his life.”

Even years after us being together he would always laugh at me because my mom would make him the FAMOUS Chocolate Cake with Fudge Frosting instead of me.

I would bake various cakes for my roommates, so he would always give me a hard time when it was around his birthday and my mom would surprise him with the most amazing Homemade Chocolate Cake.

So when we moved away he asked me if he’ll ever get that cake again. HAHA Luckily for him I do love to bake so I had to take over the rains and start making him Sinfully Rich Chocolate Cake.

Homemade Chocolate Cake

To be honest when it came to cakes, I always used box cakes. Opps…. should I be saying that on a food blog?

I finally made this Moist Chocolate Fudge Cake recipe a few years ago on my own. I was completely shocked by how easy it was. It’s a few simple ingredients that I’ll later share with you.

But first, I have to brag about it a little more…

Anytime I would have a friend over they would ask me “do you think your mom will make that Sinfully Rich Chocolate Cake?” Of course I would jump at the thought of mentioning this to her.

My mom always wanted people to feel warm and welcomed in our house so she would always make it; is it bad that we would come close to finishing her Ultimate Chocolate Fudge Cake by the end of the night. She is truly amazing in the kitchen and is the reason I’m so passionate about being in the kitchen myself.

If there is one homemade chocolate cake you need to make in your lifetime, pick this one. You will become addicted by how delicious and easy it is.

The hardest part is waiting long enough to allow the Fudge Frosting to set up before diving into it.

Moist Chocolate Fudge Cake Recipe

This isn’t your usual Moist Chocolate Fudge Cake recipe or any cake recipe really. I’m about to shock you by saying… you make this Sinfully Rich Chocolate Cake on the stove.

It is beyond easy and quick to make.

Two slices of Sinfully Rich Chocolate Cake on white plates with a glass of milk on the side.

Below are the ingredients you’ll need for the cake:

  • Margarine
  • Crisco Shortening ( I recommend the sticks for easy measurement and clean up)
  • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • Water
  • Eggs
  • Sugar
  • Flour
  • Buttermilk
  • Baking Soda
  • Salt
  • Vanilla Extract

Hint! Hint! Check out a way to avoid scrambled eggs.

Place the margarine, shortening, cocoa powder and water in a medium size sauce pan and bring to a boil. Beat eggs in a medium size mixing bowl. Add a small spoonful of the hot mixture to the eggs. That way you are bringing the eggs to the same temperature and you won’t end up with scrambled eggs.

Check out what to do next in the recipe card below.

Ultimate Chocolate Fudge Cake

Out of every chocolate dessert you could ever have, this is the one you will not be able to stop thinking about. Ultimate Chocolate Fudge Cake is dream-worthy.

Sinfully Rich Chocolate Cake doesn’t have to be made just for birthday’s or celebrations, it is a family favorite to make any day feel special.

When I was making Chocolate Cake with Fudge Frosting for Tyler’s birthday was the first time we let McKenna have a good taste of chocolate and boy she was in heaven.

I gave Tyler a beater with the left over frosting on it and he was holding McKenna at the time. He got one lick in and let’s just say kids watch everything you do. That was the only lick he got. HAHA

With having kids, you realize you would give them the world if you could. In this moment that beater was EVERYTHING! As addicted to chocolate that Tyler is, he now has more than just me to share his chocolate with.

Happy birthday babe!! XoXo

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Instructions

1

Preheat oven to 350˚ F

In a medium sauce pan bring margarine, crisco, cocoa and water to a boil, boil for a minute (read note).

3

Add eggs to a mixing bowl and beat.

4

Bring a small spoonful of the hot wet mixture and dump it into the eggs. Mix and repeat a couple times to bring your eggs to the same temperature to avoid having scrambled eggs. Once you have down it a few times, dump the rest of the hot mixture in.

6

Mix buttermilk, baking soda and salt in a small bowl and beat into the wet mixture.

7

Lastly mix in the vanilla.

Dump into a greased 9x13 cake pan and bake for about 30 minutes until toothpick comes out clean.

9

FUDGE FROSTING

10

Bring cocoa, margarine and milk to a boil, boil for a minute.

11

Slowly beat powdered sugar into hot mixture until it starts to form a frosting consistency. May need a little more powdered sugar than what it calls for.

12

Add in the vanilla.

13

Dump the frosting on the cake immediately before frosting hardens.

14

Allow to completely cool to allow frosting to set up before eating.

Notes

Use the same pan for the frosting so you can save yourself from cleaning an extra dish.
